Diamonds have made their way into the circle of love, but many of the things we believe about them aren't true. Read on to see how four common perceptions are actually misconceptions.
Diamond Engagement Rings Have Been Around Forever
Diamonds only became popular in the mid 1900's. Before then, many other gemstones and metals were used as engagement rings and wedding bands. Many people could not afford diamonds, so they would only wear silver and gold bands on their ring finger. In the 1800's many women wore rings with multiple gemstones, like Emerald, Amethyst, Ruby, Sapphire and Topaz to symbolize their marriage.
The Four C's are the Only Markers to Determine Value
Diamonds are personal. When picking out the perfect ring, they need to be looked at carefully. While cut and carat are two important things to look for, color and clarity differences might be indiscernible to your naked eye. Instead, you may want to focus on the two S's: Size and Sparkle. After all, you want the ring to be aesthetically pleasing to you - which will be different for each and every person.
Diamonds are the Only Acceptable Stone for an Engagement Ring
Although a lot of brides-to-be prefer diamonds, other gemstones are on the rise for the modern bride. Emeralds, sapphires and rubies are coming back into the engagement ring trend and they can give a nice vintage feel. Although, if completely eschewing diamonds throws you off, then check out colored diamonds. It's a good way to be unique, but also classic.
Diamonds Will Never Break
They may be hard, but they aren't indestructible. Hitting your ring at just the right (or wrong) angle can cause chipping. Taking care of your diamond is one of the most important things you can do. Getting it insured is the next! Keeping that sparkle forever takes work.
